The YCTY Teacher Tango: A Dance for the Community

The teachers in Wake County support each other in many ways, one interesting one being the “Teacher Tango,” which creative minds have devised.

Wake County is a large county. YCTY offers classes across the county (east/Fuquay Varina, west/Apex, north/Wake Forest, south/downtown Raleigh and central/ Midtown Raleigh). Our teachers live in various locations. One interesting way to support each other is when a teacher needs a substitute. Usually, one finds a substitute who lives fairly close to where the class is. But what do you do if the available teacher is across town and would need to travel during rush hour?

For example, Teacher A teaches a class on the northeastern side of the county; the nearest sub, Teacher B, lives more centrally there.  But Teacher B teaches a class at the same time.  Teacher B’s class is on the west side of the county.  Yet another teacher, Teacher C, lives on the county’s west side and can sub.  Teacher C would rather sub for Teacher B’s class and not have to drive to the northeast side of the county during rush hour to sub for Teacher A’s class.

It’s hard to follow, right? Tango is not an easy dance to follow. The teacher tango goes like this: Teacher A needs a sub on the NE side of the county. Rather than have Teacher C (located on the SW side of the county) drive over to the NE, we involve Teacher B, who is more centrally located.

Teacher B can sub for Teacher A if Teacher C can sub for Teacher B’s class.

Creative minds figured this one out.  We like to call it the Teacher Tango or the Sub Shuffle.
