After 25 years of dental practice, Howie retired in 2007 due to arthritis. He had been practicing yoga for 10 years to help manage his symptoms and challenges. During that period, and afterwards, Howie studied with a variety of local and national yoga teachers, developing and adapting yoga practices to fit his body's limitations.
After attending Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga Teacher Training in 2008, Howie felt that he found a source of people's problems and a pathway towards helping them improve their health. He refined his practice and teaching focus towards adaptive yoga, and created the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization You Call This Yoga in 2010. As Director, Howie and his team bring teachers, organizations, new and experienced yoga practitioners, and businesses together to improve the health of the community. YogaFest NC is the major fundraiser for the organization.
